New Directions in Educational Technology Research - The Research Agenda

This presentation will summarize several years of research in educational technology (ET) (e.g. computer-assisted instruction and high-fidelity simulation) to illustrate that, in general, research fails to address the questions that will inform our use of these powerful tools. In particular, media-comparative research – the comparison of an ET method to another medium (e.g. lecture) – is hopelessly confounded and does little to inform practice. A new research agenda will be presented focusing on questions that clarify when to use ET and how to effectively use it when we do. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods will be useful.
