Establishing a Multi-National Bank of Virtual Patients: The E-ViP ProjectIn 2006, several of the major European e-learning centres in medicine and healthcare submitted a bid to the European Union to create a shared online repository of the partners' virtual patients (VPs), for the improved quality and efficiency of healthcare education across the EU. The bid catalysed the emergence of a new community of practice in VP development, which linked with the major US developers of healthcare standards, MedBiquitous, to begin to define a standard for the interoperable use of this VP collection. The bid is now in its final stages of negotiation with the EU, and some of the intended uses for these VPs will be described.
