1. Annual Conference
Eighty representatives from 40 different organizations
attended the two-day conference and heard presentations
from many of the leaders in medical education and learning
technologies. Dr. Peter Greene, Executive Director of
MedBiquitous, began the conference with an overview
of the need for a common technical blueprint for medical
education that connects educators and certifying boards
and supports physician learners in new ways. Keynote
speaker Dr. Harvey Fineberg, President of the Institute
of Medicine, emphasized the need to include education
in a systems approach to healthcare and announced the
availability of the Institute of Medicines latest
report, Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality.
As the day continued, attendees heard outstanding panel
discussions on physician education and competency, e-learning
standards and recommendations, cross sector collaboration,
and physician portals. The second day of the conference
provided a more in-depth look at the SCORM standard
for education as well as standards-based communications
with certifying boards. Toby Vandermark of the American
Board of Pediatrics described how the ABP is working
with the American Academy of Pediatrics and MedBiquitous
to develop standards for reporting maintenance of certification
activities. Joel Farrell from IBM provided an update
on the activities of the Technical Steering Committee,
and Todd Freter from Sun Microsystems outlined the Consortiums
evolving technical architecture. Many thanks to all
who attended and participated!

Education Working Group Update
The MedBiquitous Education Working
Group met March 11 at the American Academy of Pediatrics to design
two important standards for the MedBiquitous technology blueprint
for medical education. The group designed a data model for representing
medical curricula. Ultimately, the curricula standard will enable
educators to link modules of education to objectives or competencies
within curricula and track an individual's progress against curricula.
A draft specification and schema will soon be available. In addition,
the group reviewed draft standards for reporting physician education
and certification activities prepared in cooperation with the American
Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics. Many
thanks to all who participated in this productive meeting!
