1. Customizing SCORM with ADL
Advanced Distributed Learning's Plugfest
8 is just around the corner. The meeting,
held October 27 to 30 at Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh, brings together
leaders in learning technologies to refine
e-learning practices, procedures, and standards.
MedBiquitous is working with ADL and will
host a working session October 28 to discuss
the special requirements for implementing
SCORM for medicine. All interested parties
are welcome to attend. For more information
on the MedBiquitous working session, contact
info@medbiq.org. For more information on
Plugfest, see http://www.adlnet.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=Plug8.
2.
Simplifying Member Data Exchange
Exchanging member name, address, and profile
information can often be a tedious and
difficult administrative process. The MedBiquitous
Member XML schema provides a standard structure
and format for this profile information,
reducing the administrative effort and
costs associated with this data exchange.
It also provides a foundation for many
other member services; several organizations
are already developing solutions using
this schema. The MedBiquitous Member Management
Working Group is meeting via teleconference
October 31 to discuss simplifying the member
XML schema. If you're a member interested
in participating in this meeting, contact Valerie
Smothers.
3. Tracking Quality Improvement
MedBiquitous is working with the American
Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to pilot standards-based
tracking of pediatricians completing the
AAP's eQIPP quality improvement program.
In 2004, completion of a quality improvement
program will be mandatory for pediatricians
wishing to maintain their certification
by the ABP. Eager to have a standards-based
solution for tracking this new requirement,
the ABP worked with the AAP and MedBiquitous
to develop a draft standard for exchanging
information about physician education and
certification activities. This Activity
Reporting draft standard is available in
the MedBiquitous
XML Repository. MedBiquitous is currently
working with the ABP and AAP to facilitate
implementation of a web services-based
solution for tracking physicians completing
eQIPP. The services will be up and running
in January 2004.
4. Membership Update
MedBiquitous is pleased to welcome Carnegie
Mellon University Learning Systems Architecture
Lab (LSAL) as its most recent member. LSAL
conducts research focused on the design
and creation of Internet-based technologies
for education and training. Led by Dan
Rehak, the lab has been a key developer
of the SCORM online learning standards
and continues to develop other innovative
technologies for learning. Dan is helping
to shape the future of SCORM and extend
its model beyond the self-paced, self-directed
learner. You can read more about this in
his technical report, Technical
Evolution of SCORM. We look forward
to working with Dan and others at LSAL
on applying these innovative ideas within
medicine.
