The Consortium looks forward to working with Dr. Magee and benefiting from his unique perspective and insights.

3. Requirements for Reusable Modules of Medical Education

On June 26, members of the MedBiquitous Consortium Education Working Group held an important Barn Raising meeting at the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative’s Alexandria, Virginia offices. The group began defining the requirements for data standards for professional medical education based on SCORM, the Shareable Content Object Reference Model constructed by ADL. SCORM is a set of standards that allows organizations to share educational resources within or across organizations. Representatives from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Family Physicians, Pfizer, Accelera, CorMed, Sun Microsystems, and Johns Hopkins University attended. The group discussed the unique needs surrounding online medical education with Jerry West, Ph.D., the ADL Co-Lab’s Technology Director.

In particular, the group examined issues related to accreditation, disclosure of financial interest, compatibility with other standards, and use of SCORM standards within a competency-based approach to continuing medical education. With a standard practice for addressing these issues, MedBiquitous members could share their high-quality educational content with one another to create effective and efficient online learning experiences for physicians. In order to make these standards useful for professional medicine, MedBiquitous will need to gather additional information from other Consortium members and from specific pilot projects.

Documents that stem from this initial Barn Raising meeting will be published in the Working Groups section of the MedBiquitous website. Other MedBiquitous members are welcome to join the Education Working Group. For more information, contact info@medbiq.org.
