Performance and Academic Success Strategies (PASS): The Stritch School of Medicine has developed a novel web based data visualization and counseling tool for monitoring academic performance, predicting academic trajectory and advising medical students. PASS more effectively integrates data to optimize academic success and provide for early identification of students that may benefit from additional educational resources. The tool uses a "parallel coordinates" visualization technique with integrated controls that staff from the school's Academic Center for Excellence use to review and model student academic data. PASS users visualize and manipulate temporally oriented academic data of current and historical student populations, an individual class or an individual student. Users model data and the resulting performance curves through on screen gating controls available on displayed axes. The advantage of PASS over past approaches is the graphic display and rapid manipulation of historic and current student performance curves. The tool’s visual nature and the flexible controls allow for the rapid identification of performance trends that were not available previously. Early identification can facilitate educational interventions, allowing our school to enhance student success. PASS data includes MCATs, course grades, USMLE Step 1 scores, etc., on 978 medical students from seven years.
