CASUS is a web based learning system to create and work though virtual patients. The system has been continuously developed and used especially in medical education since 1993. Learners typically use the virtual patients in self-directed learning sessions.

Recent developments in CASUS include innovative features which we will present at the conference and discuss our experiences with the new developments with the audience.

This includes a learner's and a teacher's dashboard based on learning analytics and a new navigation model to support a more authentic and exploratory learning experience.

As part of the EC-funded project WAVES we advanced the integration of CASUS into learning environment, which includes a xAPI implementation and improvements of the LTI interface.

Additionally, as part of another EC-funded project we integrated a research-based and innovative concept mapping tool to specifically support the clinical reasoning training with the CASUS virtual patients.

Finally, we will present our work on natural language processing to advance the automatic assessment of summary statements learners have to compose as part of their virtual patient learning session.

Part of the advancements in CASUS are available under a creative Commons license and conclusions can be valuable for other learning environments.
